Glass solutions for bridges

Noise protection and falling protection on bridges can be both highly functional and decorative at the same time. Hammerglass AB provides glazing and fixing solutions for all imaginable bridge solutions for roads and railways, as well pedestrian and cycle bridges. Given the wide choice of fixing methods available for the installation of Hammerglass panels, a bridge can be much more than simply a transit route. The use of nanotechnology helps to prevent pollutants from exhaust fumes, oil and asphalt from adhering to Hammerglass as easily as they do to ordinary glass. The estimated service life of Hammerglass is more than 40 years.

Glass panels for road bridges

No two bridges are alike. In densely populated areas there is often a need for a noise-attenuating solution while splash guards or falling protection may be preferable in other circumstances.

NOISE BARRIERS

System BRIDGE-2 and BRIDGE-3 are complete noise barrier system for mounting onto bridges along roads or railways. Depending on the bridge's design, the constructions are attached to the bridge's posts or to the side of the bridge's edge girder.

  • BRIDGE-2: Hot-dip galvanised posts for side mounting onto bridge posts
  • BRIDGE-3: CE-marked system for mounting onto bridge to the side of the bridge edge girder
  • The Hammerglass panels are installed on the outside of the posts with an external support plate and robust clamping profile
  • Height up to 6 metres
  • Printed patterns prevent birds from hitting the screens

SPLASH GUARDS

Hammerglass robust splash guard has been developed for viaducts/junctions with carriageways on several levels. The angled post system is based on the same principle as Hammerglass electrical protective shields. The structure is usually bolted to the side of the bridge edge girder, but for bridge renovation or in newbuild projects, the post system can also be mounted with a base plate beneath the balustrade upright.

Glass panels for railway bridges

Railway bridges generally require extra stable structural solutions to withstand vibrations and wind pressure from passing trains. The Hammerglass BRIDGE and GROUND noise attenuation systems meet the tough requirements for stability and safety for mounting along railways.

NOISE ATTENUATOR ON WALL

GROUND-2 is a CE-marked noise barrier system with proven solutions for fixing steel and Hammerglass. GROUND-2 is designed for mounting on walls using bolt groups.

When the Hammerglass GROUND system is mounted on a railway bridge, all the barriers are provided with earth rails and each section is earthed separately. A 45 degree bend in the top of the Hammerglass panels reinforces the structure and at the same time contributes to an effective reduction in low-frequency noise from trains.

  • A complete CE-marked system using bolt groups for installation in the ground or onto walls
  • The panels are installed on the outside of the posts with a robust clamping profile
  • Separate earthing of each section
  • Angled screen top for increased stability
  • Height up to 6 metres
  • Available with printed patterns to prevent birds from hitting the screens

WALKING BRIDGES FOR PASSENGERS

Most often the entire building project is to be carried through while traffic continues to roll at full steam along the tracks, it is necessary for most of the structures to be capable of being fully assembled close to the track area and then lifted into position.

Hammerglass installers mount all panes in situ while the steel skeleton is on the ground, and then the entire structure is lifted into place. This type of lift would be almost impossible with ordinary glass, as movements in the overall structure would result in glass breakage.

All panes are to be measured and produced individually, so even if the final construction fails to correspond 100% to the drawing, installation will still run smoothly.

  • Made to measure, individually produced screens
  • Can be glazed on the ground and lifted into place
  • Minimises the “train-free” time
hammerglass electrical protective roof

PROTECTIVE SHIELDS FOR RAILWAYS

A modern, electrical protective roof structure to cover overhead contact lines. The electrical protective shield is strength-calculated to allow for snow- and wind load and for the wind load from passing trains. The construction conforms to the electrical safety guidelines for electrical protective roof structures for installation over railway tracks. The design blends in with the surroundings, and at the same time it forms a solid barrier against live conductors.

  • 12 mm Hammerglass mounted on a system of angled posts bolted to the side of the bridge edge girder
  • Solid barrier against live conductors
  • Strength-calculated to allow for snow- and wind load and wind load from trains
  • Watertight and tamper-proof
  • Execution class EXC2 or EXC3
  • Satisfies the requirements for noise barriers laid down in the CE standard EN-14388

PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE BRIDGE

Flexible solutions for pedestrian and cycle bridges. Mounting onto existing structures or using a fixing system suited to the pedestrian and cycle bridge project. The Hammerglass panels are produced individually after the supporting structure is in place. The panels can be supplied clear, opal, coloured or printed, and provided with LED lighting.

THE ENTIRE BRIDGE CAN BE LIFTED INTO PLACE

In order for the screens to fit perfectly, all measurements are taken after the bridge’s steel structure has been assembled. All Hammerglass panels can therefore be made to measure in a parallel trapezoid in order to follow the contours of the ground and skyline precisely.

The Hammerglass panels are produced to the exact size and assembled on site directly in the factory or at the construction site. When mounting is complete, the individual bridge sections - or the entire bridge – are lifted into place with a crane. Even if the structures are stable, this type of lift would be almost impossible with ordinary glass, as movements in the overall structure would result in glass breakage.

With Hammerglass in the structure, the time when the roadway or track area must be closed to get the bridge in place is minimised.

CUSTOMISED FIXING SYSTEMS

Hammerglass is happy to participate actively at the construction stage of the bridge to ensure correct fixing and dimensioning.

If the load-bearing structure is ready, Hammerglass panels can usually be mounted directly in it. If the structure needs to be supplemented with fixing details, we will help to develop suitable proposals.

In case the customer wants a customised solution, our designers make their expertise available to produce creative proposals, construction drawings and strength calculations.

COLOUR, PRINTING & LIGHTING

The preferred solution for pedestrian and cycle bridges is a clear or opal Hammerglass panel. However, the possibilities for personal design are largely unlimited in terms of design, colour and lighting.

  • The panels can be screen-printed with rasterized prints or customised patterns to prevent bird collisions
  • Hammerglass with a blue rasterized print and LED illumination provides a bridge that is transparent during the day, but which glows blue in the evening darkness
  • LED illumination in the handrail can be directed towards the Hammerglass panels for illumination at night
  • Variable LED creates striking effects
  • For larger series, Hammerglass panels can be supplied colour-impregnated

Design and installation

Hammerglass panels are flexible and can be appropriately shaped to fit into curved profiles. The screen may be inclined at any desired angle, based on individual requirements relating to noise reflection, light reflection and snow accumulation. Water run-off may occur in towards the bridge or down below the barrier. Bring us into your discussions at the idea stage. Our designers will prepare drawings and offer suggestions for functional solutions. We will be happy to provide tenders for complete projects: Made-to-measure Hammerglass, posts, fixing systems and installation.

  • The panels are made to measure after a steel skeleton or the like has been assembled
  • Ready-made solutions for fixing and installation
  • Clear view of the surroundings
  • 300 times stronger than glass
  • Half the weight of glass
  • Minimal maintenance
